The academy seeks to develop the capacity of YSEALI members in Indonesia to become social entrepreneurs. Young Changemakers Social Enterprise Academy (YCSEA) 1.0 was launched in January 2019 with over 100 social enterprises from all over Indonesia participating in over 7 events which generated 1.483.304 online impressions and 15 media mentions.

In this second edition of YCSEA, we are targeting youth, especially female, aged between 18 to 35 years old to apply as a team of three (3). This academy aims to serve them by offering a program that is specially designed to accelerate technology-based startups. During this 6 month program, female-led tech startups will undergo experiential business-building sessions starting with coaching classes leading to a 3-day bootcamp and will be wrapped up with a presentation and networking day to prepare them as social techpreneurs. There would be campaign clinics held regularly for the rest of 2021 for the participants as well.

Cindy explained that inviting the media used to be very effortful as she needed to attend many events and press conferences to meet reporters from different media outlets. One may have a data-oriented way of thinking and the other one may be more driven by the entrepreneurship intuition. Just because someone has done something more for a longer period of time, it doesn’t always mean all of their wisdom is 100% relevant to your case. What You Need to Learn as a Business Leader 

​Are there certain ways that companies need to do in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? Surprisingly, the answer is no. Professor Michael Goldberg, a venture capitalist and Associate Professor of Design and Innovation at Case Western Reserve University, argued that there should not be any generalization on how companies should respond to the pandemic, as he spoke on @america x <a href="http://Campaign.com">Campaign.com</a> 2nd webinar yesterday. 
The ways companies respond to the pandemic are significantly affected by the condition of the country where the companies operate their business. 
The other speaker, Jefrey Joe, a technology investor at Alpha JWC Ventures, proposed two ways that the country condition could possibly affect how companies respond to the pandemic: whether the country is poor or rich; and how flexible or strict its government in terms of public policy and business regulations. 
Jefrey, however, suggested some strategies for companies to adapt to this pandemic: 
1. strengthen the organization, focus on managing the team to survive the pandemic; 
2. focus on R&amp;D (Research and Development) to help predict opportunities that the company can potentially make out of the pandemic; 
3. think about where the organization will head to after the pandemic. 
One pivotal lesson that companies should learn at this very hard time is how important it is to accelerate technology in business. Yes, what is happening today shows us that technology in business is essential not only to help companies navigate new trends, but also to deal with a crisis. 
Conclusively, both of the speakers emphasized that company's growth is what needs to be retained during and after the pandemic. The two speakers urged companies to set up strategies to maintain, even excel their growth once the pandemic is over.

Jefrey Joe, Alpha JWC Ventures 
Jefrey Joe is a technology investor who believes in making the biggest impact in Indonesia. He co-founded Alpha JWC Ventures, a venture capital firm with a successful track record since 2015, focusing on investing in technology companies in Indonesia. Given his strong interest in technology, he has also been an Angel Investor in early-stage startups in Asia and the United States. Highly entrepreneurial, Jefrey also co-founded sepulsa.com, Indonesia's pioneer online bill payment platform that does well until today.

Similarly, Nichoa Chocolate #HealthyChocolateCulture also put discounts up to 20% to all variants of its chocolate products, as well as make bundling promo. 
A digital marketing service provider, #KampungMarketer took a braver leap by discharging admin fee during last month. Beside that, they also created a new promotion campaign. "We try a new strategy to attract new users, that is by applying a campaign 'Ngiklan #DiRumahAja biar tim CS kami yang handle", Umu from #KampungMarketer said. 
This pandemic has implied a testing time for social enterprises. However, YCSEA 2.0 finalists found it to be a learning time as well. "We could say that this pandemic is a time where we could learn and practice any kind of best practices in our company's worst situation. It encourages us to think deeper and try harder to make the operational activities more effective and efficient by using all available tools in the upcoming months. Beside that, we are pushed to be more creative in looking for other profit models", Ayu from #GumiBamboo wisely explained, which we could not agree more as there are always new opportunities rising during a crisis.

Turn Adversity into Opportunity! How to Adapt Your Social Enterprise to COVID-19

​Time flies as we have undergone rapidly changing events throughout March. Among others, our attention were, and are still occupied with the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the first case in Indonesia was officially announced in the early March, the curve keeps rising, resulting in widespread fear and some emergency policies such as social distancing, work-from-home, home-learning, rapid-test, and even local lockdowns.
However, widespread social supports are also seen as people sharing advices on how to prevent oneself getting infected by the virus, tips for effective work-from-home, donations for medical staffs and those economically affected by the virus, as well as supporting messages on social media. 
Yes! In a heavy time like today, supports from each other are critically needed to keep us moving and stay hopeful. Reminiscing the good past times probably can also cheer us up a lil bit or more. As we are stepping into April, it's no wrong to throwback to some happy moments we experienced in March, don't you think? 
We in YCSEA team were happy that despite the pandemic, we managed to welcome 10 finalists of YCSEA 2.0 from different cities, to our bootcamp in Jakarta on March <a href="tel:8122020">8 - 12 2020</a>. Bearing in mind the safety of all the finalists and committees, we frequently reminded them to keep themselves clean by washing hands or using hand sanitizer, and to be attentive to their body condition by checking-up their body temperature and use face-mask when having cough. Thankfully, all of us remained healthy till the last day of the bootcamp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

March was Tough, But Here is A Happy Moment to Remember

​Since two weeks ago, work-from-home (WFH) has been implemented by offices in many cities in Indonesia, you know, in order to halt the spread of COVID-19. Since the day one of WFH, how many social media accounts have you seen giving tips on how to stay productive during WFH? Some people may find it difficult to get used to WFH due to some different factors such as time management, limited interactions, a not-so-conducive atmosphere of the house, etc. Otherwise, some other people may enjoy WFH for a longer morning prep time, being enabled to be more focused, less noise, etc.&nbsp; Despite the plus minus, our YCSEA 2.0 finalists, #KampungMarketer and Nichoa Chocolate #HealthyChocolateCulture are also turning to WFH in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and particularly to ensure the safety of their beneficiaries. “We have to assign WFH to our beneficiaries, and temporarily cancel any meetings that require gatherings such as educational trips, training, and focus group discussion. To make sure that the we all still work well, we coordinate via Whatsapp group and also organize virtual meetings”, Umu from #KampungMarketer explained.&nbsp; While WFH is a whole new experience for some people, both who enjoy it or not, it has been otherwise a routine for the beneficiaries of #GumiBamboo and #MenganyamPesisirWomenEmpowerment. Since the beginning, far before the COVID-19 pandemic today, the two social enterprises have been implementing WFH for their beneficiaries. Therefore, they found no fundamental change in the working mechanism due to this pandemic. However, they still find it important to ensure that their beneficiaries are all well-informed about this pandemic. “We often remind them of what needs to be done to prevent themselves from getting infected by this virus and to immediately seek medical assistance if they feel any flu-like symptom”, Ayu from #GumiBamboo explained.&nbsp; Yes! Ensuring everyone's safety is important during this very time. Everyone has an equal chance to be infected by COVID-19, that is why reminding each other to pay more attention to their health can help limit, hopefully stop the spread of the virus.&nbsp; Beside ensuring the safety of the beneficiaries, what&nbsp; is also important is ensuring the continuity of the business and preventing extreme loss. These social enterprises implement some changes in business strategy in terms of production efficiency, profit model, and financial management. How does each strategy work for their business? Beneficiaries' Safety is No.1! YCSEA 2.0 Finalists Go WFH

​Hi Changemakers!&nbsp; How’s your work-from-home and social distancing going so far? Hopefully you are not running out of ideas to stay productive and positive while staying home and limiting physical meetings with other people. Our awareness and willingness to social distance is urgently needed to stop the spread of COVID-19, which now has been a global pandemic. Yes, the COVID-19 pandemic has been notoriously affecting many aspects in our life and society. Among the most severely affected aspects is business activities at all scales. Companies have to adopt new strategies in response to this pandemic, in order to survive their business from this critical situation.&nbsp; What about social enterprises? How are they distinctively affected by this pandemic? Some of the YCSEA 2.0 finalists share their story on the impact of this pandemic on their business and social mission, as well as how they are trying to cope with it.&nbsp; The spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia since the beginning of March has been affecting social enterprises in different ways. In terms of business operation, scarcity of raw materials resulting from this pandemic has pushed social enterprises to temporarily suspend their production. This is experienced by #MenganyamPesisirWomenEmpowerment as explained by the Founder, Kharolin. “We are now having difficulties in our production because the shops from where we usually buy our raw materials like thread or needles are closed. Our sewers are also temporarily suspending their services.” Scarcity of raw materials as a result of COVID-19 pandemic has also pushed many of #KampungMarketer ‘s business users, who mostly are online business actors, temporarily stop their production. Consequently, #KampungMarketer as a provider of human resources in digital marketing, has to encounter a drop in the number of their business users.&nbsp; #GumiBamboo, who provides eco-friendly utensils to restaurants and other F&amp;B industries, encounters a drop in sales, also because their B2B customers have to stop their business operation during this pandemic. Besides, the lockdown policy in many countries has also temporarily stopped their international shipping.&nbsp; Social enterprises, differ from conventional business for its social missions, also are challenged by this pandemic in terms of their social activities. They have no choice but to cancel some of their social activities directed to their beneficiaries such as training and recruiting more beneficiaries, in order to ensure everyone’s safety and to halt the spread of the virus.&nbsp; #GumiBamboo has even seen a drop in their customers’ trust in using eco-friendly utensils. “Some cafes that have actually committed to using reusable utensils are now using plastic utensils again as they think plastic is more higiene. This is actually what we worry about, that this pandemic could prevent people from decreasing their plastic consumption. This is a challenge for us since our mission is to raise awareness on responsible production and consumption”, Ayu, the Founder, explained.&nbsp; These YCSEA 2.0 finalists find it very challenging to cope with the current situation since the pandemic is an external crisis that happens beyond their control. None of them have ever conceived of the widespread impact of the pandemic, and that it would also affect the business and social activities of their social enterprise. However, for #GumiBamboo, who is based in Lombok, this is not their first time to deal with a crisis. Ayu, told the YCSEA team that she and her team has dealt with and survived the crisis resulting from the Lombok earthquake in July 2018. “Since we have passed 3 -5 months of an emergency situation after an earthquake hit Lombok in 2018, which quite disrupted our business operation, it’s not something new for us to make a plan B for our business. But still, we find this pandemic worse than the earthquake as it disrupts not only our local but also international sales. We still cannot figure out how bad it will affect our business this year, but we will do what we can.” “We have never conceived of something like this crisis before. However, since we have to keep moving in whatever situation, especially this kind of situation, we have to strengthen each other and be responsible with our work, and keep thinking of what needs to be done to cope with this situation”, Umu from #KampungMarketer explained.&nbsp; Yes! We agree with Ayu, Umu, and other social enterprise actors who decide not to give up amidst this difficult situation. Alpha JWC Ventures has given investment to Lemonilo.com thus, describing Lemonilo.com as an example, Erika revealed how Lemonilo.com has attracted her firm to invest in Lemonilo.com. “When you first come to us, your product or business doesn’t have to be perfect. What’s important for us is, your product or business has to be clear and you have to be able to show us the direction that your product or business is heading to,” she said. She added that most investors want their investee to fully understand their own products and know what to do to develop their business. “Do not expect your investor to show you the way. You are the one who should know the way and show it to them,” she said. She also gave advise that to win a smart investment, which is not mere money, investee need to build a good relationship with their investors. “You can learn from Lemonilo.com. They came to us and talk to us, not just wanting money from us.”

Changemakers, have you ever felt like creating a social enterprise but did not know how to start? Shinta has been very concerned about health issue since she learned that her family had diabetic history. She further realized that Indonesian people have since long been practicing a poor diet which is high in trans-fat/ cholesterol, sugar, sodium, and artificial ingredients and preservatives. She found out that healthy food products in Indonesia were expensive that only people with high incomes could afford. Motivated to make some healthy food products which were affordable, easy to consume, and tasty, she then, with two of her friends, created Lemonilo.com, a social enterprise with instant noodles as its first prototype product. Why instant noodles? “Simply because we Indonesians, love it so much that we can eat it everyday,'' she said. With a strategic use of technology and smart investment from Alpha JWC Ventures, Lemonilo.com is consistently blossoming; and it is now a well-known tech-based market leader in the sector of healthy food products in Indonesia. 

Well Changemakers, do you get it what’s the lesson learned from Shinta? It is that the ideas to start a social enterprise are actually so close to you. You can start with observing your surroundings and identifying problems that require solutions. 2. Click the menu in the top left corner of the screen (beside words: “Campaign”)

3. Click your profile picture, click setting in the top right corner and choose ‘Edit’

4. Fill out the blank space (please write down ‘Participants of YSCE Academy’ on your bio profile)

The first step you have to do to join Young Changemakers Social Enterprise Academy 2.0 is to be registered as YSEALI member. It is very simple!

You just have to open https://asean.usmission.gov/yseali/ and fill out the form. Don’t forget to verify your email.

For alumni of one of the following YSEALI programs: YSEALI Academic Fellowship, YSEALI Professional Fellowship, YSEALI Generation Regional Workshop, YSEALI Seeds for the Future Grants Competition are preferred.

And remember, you have to be at the age between 18 and 35 years old at the time of the beginning of the Academy.

How To Apply: Step 1 - Be A Part Of YSEALI Member!


This is the last step for you to join the Academy. In this step, you have to add one or more updates and share them through social media.

🤷‍♀️ Why do I have to add an update on my campaign?

Because, with an update, you can share information about your initiative or team and also completing your requirements to become participants of Young Changemakers Social Enterprise Academy 2.0. 

Here are some details that must be included in your update:
• 1st paragraph: Introduce your initiative and team
• 2nd paragraph: Describe your initiative and share the social impact made (it must be answered 5W+1H)
• 3rd paragraph: Your initiative’s success story
• 4th paragraph: Answer this question, “Why we have to choose you and your team as the participant in this Academy?”

The last thing you have to do is to share your campaign’s profile as much as you can to get people’s support your social enterprise. Ask them to join and take action in your campaign. 

Remember, the more people join your campaign, the more chances you and your team will get to win the prizes!

1. Prepare your #hashtag - You can use your initiative project as your hashtag. But, please make sure your hashtag is simple, catchy, and identify your initiative project.

2. Set your goal - Write down the objective of your initiatives within 100 characters.

3. Describe your initiatives - Describe your initiatives project in detail and answer 5W+1H questions.

4.Call To Action (CTA) - Tell people what can they do to help or support your initiative’s project.

5. Prepare your cover image that represents your initiative’s project (size image 2:1).

After completing the draft, you can follow the steps below to fill up your campaign page on the Campaign’s app:

1. Click the menu in the top left corner of the screen (beside words: “Campaign”)

Do you still remember Tanipanen as one of the finalist Young Changemakers Social Enterprise 1.0?

On early October 4, 2019, Tanipanen has launched their business in a concept of talkshow named “Food Waste Battle: Why Do We Throw Perfectly Good Food?”. In this talkshow, Whisnu Febry Afrianto (CEO & Founder Tanipanen), Azmi Basyarahil (CEO & Co-founder Ranum), Satya Hangga (Co-founder IE21), and also moderated by Ibnu Budiman (WRI Researcher), talked about the differences between food loss and food waste, and things we can do to reduce it.

Tanipanen also gave a workshop about steps to make an eco-enzym, which is easily done, and provided a food sensory test for participants to find the differences between perfect produce and imperfect one.

It's been a week!

Hello, Young Changemakers!  We're a week away from YCSE Academy Boot Camp. Does anyone still remember what you learned during the Boot Camp?

Let's see it once again! On the first and second day, Young Changemaker discussed about Social Enterprise through various methods such as Life Plan, Theory of Change to Social Business Model Canvas. We practiced how to make attractive pitch decks, get to know the types of funding and investors. Read more 👇

Well, on this third day, we learned a lot about marketing and campaigning online, which was presented by the Campaign team,.They are William Gondokusumo as the CEO of Campaign, Imam, Asti, and Cindy.

The presentation was started by Mr. William, sharing stories on how to start a social movement, what we have to prepared, and tips & tricks. Followed by the presentation of the Imam that explained more about the current social media platform. What things need to be considered when Sociopreneurs want to market their products. One of the tips is through storytelling.

Next session was delivered by Asti, who discussed more about content marketing. Before started, Asti explained that the Sociopreneur needs to know in advance who the target audience is by creating their buyer persona. In addition, the Sociopreneur must also know types of content that used for each platform on social media. After understanding about content, Cindy explained how to make an interest visual through photos and videos. At the end of this session, the participants made the action plan, that they would do after participating in the Boot Camp activity.

TODAY is YCSE Academy Networking and Presentation Day!

Most of Sociopreneur maybe have a question about 'how to building sustainability into your social enterprise', and yesterday, on our second day of YCSE Academy, Mr. Romli answered it. He shared about essential strategies for social enterprise sustainability, types of funding and how to crafting an effective pitch.

We also made the mission statement in one sentence with 8 words about mission, vision, and values. With it, you can develop the sentence itu the S.M.A.R.T goal. We learned the 10 types of funding, until how to craft an effective pitch.

That was a GREAT journey, it made us know what we gonna do as a Social Entrepreneur. Especially, how to do pitch in front of our investor, do's and don't, etc.

The Second Day of YCSE Academy Bootcamp! 😎

Today was the first day of YCSE Academy Boot Camp. All top 10 finalists, actually, 30 peoples joined our boot camp together  . 

We had so much fun and learned many things about Social Enterprise with the expertise, PLUS's team. 

Psst, before we started to the workshop we sang some motivational songs and played together to keep up the good spirit and get to know each other 😁

As the first exercise, all team had to pitch their innovation social in one minute and displayed their product for US Embassy (mini exhibition) 😍

The workshop started with Stephanie from PLUS, that explained about Social Enterprise. Thing that we learned from her is Social Enterprise is how we manage the balance between profit and social impact to achieve sustainability.

We made life plan where each team presented their life plan, like how they first met and how their social innovation made. PLUS's team also shared about the 'Theory of Change' and Social Model Business Canvas (SMBC). With using that tool, it can help Sociopreneur to know the mission, clarify, and define your goal, step by step.

#TanganSejutaImpian is a social campaign for providing an affordable brain-controlled bionic arms for those who suffer an arm loss.

According to Survei Penduduk Antar Sensus 2015 Indonesia still have 2,61% of disabilities who are hard to controll their hand even fingers. Then the other problem happen when the price of bionic arm is really expensive. it is not affordable for low income society. Therefore, Afta will provide a low-cost brain-controlled bionic arms with sharing system.
