Degil House is a creative space for people from all ages and backgrounds. It has a café of tea and coffee for hanging out and chatting with your friends and families. Degil House also provides a library which has best novels from all over the world. It is also a creative space for book readers, writers, poets, musicians, painters, dancers, and any other artists. Various kind of events are held at this space, such as music gigs, workshops, trainings, public discussions, book club, book reviews, local movie screening, live murals, poem readings, flea markets, creative markets, and so on. Degil House was built on June 20, 2018. It is in Jalan Sei Silau number 50/54 Medan, North Sumatra. At first, Degil House was founded by two people from different backgrounds yet similar life vision. Tengku Ariy (a writer and musician) and Citra Hasan (social worker and educator) have vision in having an alternative informal school for people who are eager to learn diverse knowledge and skills in order to have strong character and extensive paradigm through music, arts, and literature. Start from founding www.degilzine.com (a local and alternative media in Medan) in 2017, Tengku, Citra, and friends covered news, reviewed bands, songs, and other artists, and published local stories. By the time they expanded Degilzine, they initiated a space for people who are able to gather and communicate each other. Degil House was build after that. "Degil" means "stubborn" in Indonesian dictionary. They hoped that Degilzine as well as Degil House would become a house which has strong character and stance in a positive way. Recently, Degil House also has few volunteers participating in it. By having a creative space, people do not only hang out and have small chat, but they also do networking, share knowledge, idea and experience, and initiate their ideas into actions such as events or programs in Degil House itself or collaborating with other communities, institutions, or spaces. By the time of the process, people are able to be more independent and creative in their well being. Degil House also is becoming a safe space for object of discrimination such as gender, disability, and so on.
