Contributes enterpeneurship chance for the students to earn money.
Labuh is a social entreprise which is conducted as home-based business by upcycling corn husk as vehicle to empower 7 female students of Al Adabiy Islamic Boarding School in Bakau Kecil Village, West Borneo. The students are orphans and unfortunate children in aged 16 to 17 years old. The students’ daily life is so simple with limited allowance from their family. To meet their daily needs and to help the school, the students hand-in-hand plant fruits and vegetables and keep two stores as income source for the school. Based on the condition, all their daily needs and tuition fee are given for free by the school and contributed by the donaturs. In fact, after inteviewing 3 teachers, it is told that some female students are so skillfull in making handmade stuffs. For instance, patchwork handicraft. Thus, I believe that the students own qualified productivity and potential to be bestowed with maximazing skills of creating handmade crafts. Thus, the potential of the corn waste is chosen as a vehicle for training and economic development programs. Labuh project realizes that corn husk can be upcycled into higher quality product with promising economy value. First reason, basically corn production in West Borneo is quite large even has increased every year. According to data stated by Regional Secretary of West Borneo, corn production in 2019 amounted 151,500 tons. This sizable corns have an impact on the amount of corn waste. From the harvest of corn, the weight of the corn husk ranges between 30% and 40%. The availability of the corn husk is sufficient to be supply. Second reason, corn husk is easy to be collected either from the farmers and the traders in the market. It is collected once in 3 months from the farmers and once in a week from the corn sellers. This movement also can be indirect campaign about the various economic potential of the corn husk because this far, in West Borneo, this huge amount of corn husk is only distributed for animal foods such as cows and pigs. Regarding to the activities, the corn husk will be produced to be various flowers. These flowers are used for main decoration of wedding gifts. Traditionally, the wedding gifts are packed beautifully in several baskets or boxes of glass according to the types of gifted equipments for wedding ceremony. Secondly, This project also provides tree of egg (malay: pokok telok) and nowadays trend, for instance, bouquet flowers. For the first year, I choose 7 female students, aged 16 to 17 years old, to become the producen. Therefore, they need to envolve in 3 month-weekly workshop of making flowers; wedding gifts and dowers; pokok telok; manggar and to continue in producing process. The workshops are needed because the students have never made this crafts before. Overall, this project contributes entrepeneurship chance for the students. It is targeted if the students will earn IDR 1,000,000 (USD currency to Rupiah currency exchange rate, $1 = IDR 13,691, 14th January 2019). Eventually, to encourage students’ awareness about potential and to raise the value of being financially independent are the main targets of this project.
