I lived at the village called Tangma in Papua for 18 years. As a native papuan, the experiences I had during living in my village was not easy. Infrastructure were not built well yet, so we have to walk 8 to10 hours just to get to the Wamena city. Education was also Horrible. In my elementary school we only had 1 teacher to teach 6 classes. Horrible, isn’it?

I still remember, when I was about 6 years old, I was helping my teacher to teach my friends in the class. My teacher asked me to teach alphabets to my friends as I was the quickest to understand. So I was kind a his co-teacher in my school. That’s the situation of how hard for us to have teachers and access a proper education.
 Fast forward, In 2013 I received a privilege scholarship from one of states companies to continue my study in Tanri Abeng University Jakarta. After I graduated, I wanted to give back then I started Hano Wene project. Hano Wene is a project wanting to help Children in Tangma village by providing a library in order to increase the awareness of literacy. Although we don’t have many teachers, atleast book is there and we teach them how to read.

Increasing the interest of reading and access the education for a better life in the future

After coming back from this program, I will develop more library in Papua and west Papua Province area. Currently we are opening fours more library in Lani Jaya, Sarmi, Kaimana and Sorong. Those library are two different provinces, each library we will need funding about US$2.000, those money we will use for development of library. One library project we can finished in 4 to 6 months.

We hope that, we can get funding from different sector from NGO’s, government and International Organisations so that we can develop more libraries in the remote area of Papua. 

Build more libraries in the remote are of Papua and West Papua Province

In our library have schedule every week on Wednesday and Friday after class we playing soccer. We also provide different kind of games, because we don’t want the students got bored with study. 

There is not just games we provide but for increasing the interest of reading, library Hano Wene provide many kind of activity that the students can explore, since our in the villages we only have very few teachers so most of time they study by playing. Our teachers basically volunteer, they are not graduates from university. 

By providing those games and activities, the students are very happy to come library.

Why is the library important? In Papua, reading interest is still low, especially in remote areas. Apart from not having book facilities to read, they are also uneducated. And how can we be able to build corners if we can't empower them? Our hope is to build up a reading interest. I have a dream, I want to build more than 1000 library’s across Papua, especially in the remote areas, because I believe that only education can bring change to my community and have a better life in the future. 

In the future we want to collaborating with the different sectors from NGOs, the government, and private/business sector nationally and internationally would then help in developing further educational infrastructures in the rural areas.

By opening more library’s, minimize literacy and increase interest of reading 

My success story is, in beginning of 2018, we started campaign donations book across Jakarta, on our campaign we able to collect more 500 books, this books we already sent to library Hano Wene in Tangma Papua.

We are so grateful that a lots of friends, family and community donate all the books, some books also we received from USA, Australia, Malaysia and India. 

Our second campaign for donation books, we are able to collect more than 1000 books, now ready to send this book to four places in Papua Province and west Papua Province .

Literacy is one of the programs included in the 2013 education curriculum. This program aims to increase the love of school children in reading books, magazines, and others. Considering, school children currently have a low interest in reading, so the need for school literacy activities to familiarize children with reading and start making it a preferred routine.

In the villages of Papua, we have different experiences, at school don't have books to read, how do we have the interest to read while we don't have the books. Therefore Hano Wene Library is provide library in villages and remote of Papua.

Therefore, I do hope that I could have chance to be part of YCSE Academy 2.0 program on how to execute such project for a better result and I want to learn from mentors how to developing my project better. I am pretty sure that the impact won’t stop on me but also other Papuan youth.
