Mainstreaming Mathematics as topic of conversatios for a more rational Indonesian society

As all children are obligated to study at schools and mathematics is mandatory in the 12-years period of study, more children are experiencing bad encounter with mathematics due to bad mathematics communication by the teachers in classrooms. This is worsened by the commonly accepted stigma that maths is hard, unnecessarily complicated, and most of the time irrelevant. In contrast, digital culture, big data, and artificial intelligence are things that bombards our life through daily uses of smartphones and social media, and even also job markets. Data-based decisions are now commonly done in almost all sectors by all type of jobs. Looking at this current condition, we urgently need to internalize mathematical and rational thinking to our culture through something more popular and mainstream e.g. Instagram. This is mainly to make mathematics, and hence rational thinking to become more accessible to the public. To achieve this, we do: 1. Re-communicating Mathematics through humours, stories, and practical examples using Instagram (@ngobrolmatematika) in ways which are simpler, more relevant, and inspiring. This is to reach and help people to reconnect with mathematics and change their perspective of mathematics as something dull, procedural, and irrelevant, to something fun, creative, and essential. 2. We develop mathematics human resources, mainly university students, through mentorship program to be ambassadors of the values of better mathematics communication. We invest on human capital to ensure abundance of role models for future generations that are working on various sectors but holding closely to the values of importance of basic mathematical knowledge and rational thinking. 3. We connect people having the same concerns as we do through offline events to talk, discuss, and collaborate about problems related to maths communication and maths education.
