SEMESTA KATA started our social project by Mei 2018 with LITERACY classes for teens and kids from waste-pickers (Pemulung) families at Jati Padang - Jakarta. Our social actions in 2018 can be seen on this video: https://youtu.be/IybkhJUXbmE By the time, we learned that the wastepickers community made significant contributions to the city and the people. That is a fact that missed to be recognized by the government, most citizens, and even among waste-pickers themselves. Despite their undervalued contribution, Pemulung lives in underserved communities and still struggling for basic needs, such as poor sanitation that practice open defecation gave serious threat for their health and productivity. At the beginning of 2019, we deploy SANITATION programs in our Community Development Programs. Next, our 2019 new initiative is to build SOCIAL ENTERPRISE that empowers women in the waste-pickers family to have a new skill and new income for their family. We believe Pemulung has an important role for better waste management in Indonesia. They have great potential to be the partner for citizens to manage the household waste. We noted that now, at least, there are three applications in Indonesia that connect Pemulung with household for waste management service. SEMESTA KATA always seeks to do CollaborACTION with other parties that inline with our mission: "We strive to improve the quality of life of waste-pickers and their capacity to grow".
