Trash for Class is a program which provides English classes to Balinese children in Sibangkaja, Bali aged 7 - 17. Instead of paying the course with cash, the participants pay it with a minimum of 5 kilograms of recyclable trash per semester. By exchanging trash with class, the students have the opportunity to learn the value of trash, instead of dumping and burning it they can bring to our facility and get free English classes. Trash that has been collected from the students is delivered to our own recycling center with 21 categories of trash. Every semester we are able to collect more than 1500 kg of recyclable trash from the program.

Besides the English lesson, we also implement experiential and experimental curriculum on waste education at the students' own school. We develop 14 hands-on, in-class and field trip lesson plan to be shared to the students. Through hands-on activities, it allows the students to gain a better understanding of the waste problem, a topic which rarely discussed in the school curriculum. 

To drive the change of the old burning and dumping waste behavior, we can not just come once, we need a long term education program. With passion and dedication of teaching, the students will essentially remember the importance of how should they treat their own waste properly. Our target is school community because 80% of the school waste is recyclable, so they can make a huge impact to minimize waste ended up in the landfill if they can recycle their own waste within the school.

In #educatingchangemakers we need to sustain this project. Therefore, we currently invest our organization with shredding and injection plastic machines to prototype upcycled/recycled products and in the future, we are able to sell these products globally.

“if you wanted to increase the value of your business, then you need to innovate”. In this coaching class we learnt one of the most important element to sustain and to grow the social enterprise, that is innovation. As the example, Blackberry is not sustained anymore because no more innovation. The basic thing that basically sustain the enterprises are configuration, offering, experience.  In configuration, make sure that the enterprise is not growing and processing by itself but try to expand connection and collaborate with other enterprises. After expanding the connection, focus on the product and your performance as a team. Try to create innovation then evaluate and create again. The last one is experience which including service, channel, brand and customer engagement. 


Coaching Class 3

Since we are in Bali, we are unable to attend the class in @america. However, we make our time to watch the video online. It was a great session with Evoware, an organization which also has the same mission with us to tackle the waste problem in Indonesia.

In this session, we learn about to know our goal and why we are doing it and make a convincing message in how we deliver our mission to the audience. Not only the basic foundation of social businesses, but there was also a discussion about the business model canvas which really helps us to get more visual on how to run our enterprise. Besides, David and team also explain how to make a great proposal. It is something that we never think before, but through this session, we are able to gain practical information of the strong pillars in running a social enterprise.


Coaching Class 1

This class invite Mr Romy from instellar to discuss about measuring social impacts. Like the coaching class before, this one is also very helpful in how we set mission/goals. The study case that were being used on this session was very relatable on our social enterprise. In measuring social impact, we need to at least discuss these 3 numbers. 1st is about measuring the traget of a population that we want to reach. 2nd is about the quality of social impact, how far we gonna give the impact. 3rd is how long you are going to achieve the goals. All those 3 aspects need to be very specific, so once you tell somebody they will easily understand what your project is and what kind of problem you are trying to solve..

Coaching Class 4

Again, we were joining the session through the live video on Facebook. Burgreens as a facilitator is very clear in delivering the social enterprise journey. There are so many takeaways we bring home from this session. There are 5 areas to learn in the journey on being social entrepreneur. 1st is the people. right people, right place, right team is very important in business. 2nd is market strategy which we need to develop revenue by analyzing how dynamic the market is. 3rd is execution about how efficient our operation is to make us sustain. 4th is cash, how much cash we have both from external and internal cash flow. 5th is the purpose, why we are doing this business. Furthermore, Helga also explain about the challenges which may happen in running social enterprise such as: the conflict between co-founders, to run business with familiy (in this case husband), the cash flow, managing the employees, last but not least is the financial challenge. Not just challenges she also deliver tools how we turn the challenge into an action.

As a tourism island which attracts many people to come, the number of waste produced in Bali is keep growing, which they predict the landfill can only acomodate its space for the next 5 years. Students especially, are clueless the impact of burning trash and also dumping it to the landfill. They are basically following what has just happened form the previous generation. It is getting worse when there is lack of information in the school curriculum which discuss about this issue. What they know is as long as they already put the trash in the bin, the waste problem is solved. It is just bring the problem to the next level. They do not know where their waste goes after, which apparently can link to other problem such as air, water and land pollution. Therefore, we develop trash for class program, we find a unique way to attract them to not put their recyclable trash in the landfill, instead bring it to our facility and get free english classes and environmental fun learning. Besides we also install separation bins at their own school. Our target is school community because 80% of the school waste is recyclable, so they can make a huge impact to minimize waste ended up in the landfill if they can recycle their own waste within the school.

We start at 2015 with 50 students and now our community dynamically growing every year and currently, we have 400 students with a strong commitment coming from all around local schools in Bali.  From 2015, we have been collected more than 8000 kilograms of recyclable trash and bring it to the recycling center. These number of trash that we can collect is also becoming an eye-opening as well as the achievemnt for our students that that can prevent those much waste ended up in the landfill.  These changemakers successfully bring impacts to their community by implementing the concept of Trash for Class in their local schools through the installation of separation bins. We have installed separation bins at 8 schools around our facility, which not just installing we also have just implemented long term education program with hands-on activities start with Grade 5 students. In coming year, with more educators join our program. We can implement for the whole students who participate in Trash for Class program. Align with our mission, we provide them with an Activism class as a campaign to promote avoiding single-use plastic products trough art performance around Bali. This brings them to the fruition of successfully attending the climate change conference in Germany and Katowice, Poland. Last but not least, this literally leads us to get more trust from the community to expand this project. 


We strongly believe that by joining this #Besociopreneur campaign program, will be a great platform for us to network, exchange knowledge and collaborate with like-minded people. The benfit of this networking is to sustain the impact of trash for class program not only in Bali, but also in other parts of Indonesia. As we all agree that waste problem is not just happening in Bali, it is happening in every part of Indonesia. Thus, by having direct conversation with those passionate people, as somebody who already have solution especially on education, we can develop impactful collaboration with other community which focus in other area to tackle waste problem such as: government advocation, women empowerment,  village-based recycling center, waste bank system, and many more with a same mission to really stop the growing waste problem in Indoensia. Furthermore, we are developing products from plastic and in need of insights in how to promote and sell this products widely, as we know the team of #BeSociopreneur have strong expertise on how to sustain projects impactly as well as financially since none of us have strong background in business. Therefore, being a participant on this program will really benefit us, because we not share what we already have but also  enrich our knowledge how to be a real sociopreneur.
