Coaching Class 1
The class for the very first session began with the topic of how a startup should operate and maneuver the business operation during the early stage. This addressed the importance of first decisions for the startup as those will determine how fast the business will grow or even fail. To have a better understanding about how startup grows, the concept of “lean startup methodology” was introduced. It was told that the business model for the startup needs to be based on market interaction. It is not about what we are assuming but what the market has validated for the business model, said Evan Burfield, the Co-Founder of 1776. He also mentioned that simplicity is one of the key factors for a compelling business pitch, one of the elements that the startup needs to have.
In this session, Shinta Nurfauzia (from Lemonilo) and Erika Dianasari (from Alpha JWC Ventures) were also invited to share their experience in starting their business. While the former stressed out the importance of the prototype or she called MVP (minimum viable product) for testing the market and generating valuable information to perfect the final product, the latter clarified that being clear with product proposition and the market segment that the startups want to tap.

Third coaching was the continuation of previous classes which at this session focused on upscaling the relatively well-established startup----and more importantly taught us what we have to pay attention to when we want to expand the business. Here were several key factors to growing the startup, new demography, diversification, government, and internet gathered from the opening presentation. Tanihub took advantage of the last-mentioned key factor in growing the traditional agricultural business processes and even more converting the product purchasing them to a well managed online platform. We have a quite similar experience with Tanihub in transforming the old paradigm into the new one—our case is in the waste sector. To be specific, we built upcycling workshops to convert waste into fashion product items to be sold through our online store. By doing so, we highly expect that there are new improved model businesses for this very important sector.

The coaching class closed with the topic of business pitching, an important stage for the startup to have a secure financial/investment support. The value proposition is again mentioned as the key element for the convincing business pitching. Here, the research is highlighted to be very crucial in understanding what services and products we want to exactly offer to potential users/customers. It also mentioned that having a good mix of expertise is recommended as well.  For this session, STOQO presented their experience in building up the team. One unique point is how they manage the gender roles in bringing their business potential.

The second coaching went further by digging more about market segmentation and questions on what market the start-up serves. Knowing the market we want to exploit leads to what the Chairman of True called paying customers, which is very important regardless of how good the product and the business model are—without paying customers, a startup would not be able to sustain and generate profit. Hara Company showed us their journey of how they meet their market and create services that are very relevant to the needs of local farmers in Indonesia. Hara found out that access to a loan is very limited for local farmers and Hara was able to provide the platform for that farmers to have much easier administrative processes in collaboration with promising bank institutions.  Alpha JWC Ventures put so much interest on these initiatives as the business model really fits that market segmentation is looking for.

Thanks to many supports from our customers, partners and team members we have attained many achievements and received special recognition from reputable organizations including Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Asian Development Bank, and many more. We have also participated in several competitions, once we were rewarded to be Young Social Innovator by KOMPAK (Australia) NGO. Our activities also drew attention from an international organization, Asian Development Bank, in their first Green Business Forum, we were invited to be one of their main speakers, sharing about our project to international audience and delegates across many countries. This year we have also been trusted to be one of the tenants in very prestigious event in the field of handcraft in Indonesia, INACRAFT (organized by BEKRAFT). At that time, we had an opportunity to meet President Joko Widodo as he was the one who officially opened the exhibition for this year.

Our Achievement

As waste issues are currently rising to the global phenomenon and alerting people about the damage of excessive waste production, we believe that immediate and serious actions must be taken. Thus, here we are to address these troubling issues by targeting people behavior and awareness. It is very important to bring closer to the waste producer about the beauty side of waste recycling and inform them about what can do and contribute to reducing waste pollution. Our products are a good example of an effective campaign in raising people awareness about waste and in turn changing their behavior afterward. Facilitating income-generating activities for local stakeholders who work on waste management at source is an important matter as well. By adding up the value of waste with introducing our fashionable products, it drives the value of waste in upstream to be high enough to prevent it from being disposed to landfill. At the same time, additional earning is offered to local stakeholder to actively participate in doing waste collection and sorting much better.

Our Innovation

As mentioned in the previous updates, our initiatives focus on how to creatively convert the waste materials into stunning and ready to wear jewelry collections. We collaborate with local waste banks and waste suppliers to obtain the desired quality of waste. For the production, we hire several groups of women to become our jewelry artisan. Not only that but we also soon launch our sidekick program to provide education allowance for their children and basic health care insurance in return for all beads and charms they have made. In the marketing side, presently we rely on the national and international marketplace while approaching potential partners for co-branding. We will at the nearest time sign a contract with our production vendors and then establish collaborative work with other eco-apparels stores.

What Is Done

Rubysh is a new emerging brand of eco-sustainable fashion that takes advantages out of the abundant waste materials. By doing so, Rubysh has successfully recovered hundreds of kilograms of waste to be used as the replacement material for the pieces of jewelry. It started from PET bottles and now we are going into exploring other wasted materials like HDPE packaging bottles. Despite its negative impact on the environment, we realized that waste materials are durable enough to be mold as charms, beads for our unique jewelry lines. During our production, we also employ women from marginalized communities nearby the dumpsite areas as part of our local women empowerment program. Therefore our scope of work extends beyond just bringing back waste into production chains but also providing job opportunities for people in need.

Who we are

After the completion of the program, we would like to expand our market coverage to a much higher extent. In the beginning, we want to partner up with many influential brands like cotton ink, body shop, and many others to expand our market coverage.  For the next step, we will penetrate the international market by having a store in Bali in the next two years and probably in the next five years in Singapore. As the raw estimation, we need additional financial aid of 130 million rupiahs to reach that point. We can’t do this alone given our capacity and limitations, we thus put high expectation in joining this program to help us forward our causes to a bigger scale.

What We Do Next

We are extremely motivated to join this program because we are so certain that this program offers many benefits to our initiative. Not only receiving financial supports, but we will also be granted with a privilege of meeting with inspiring mentors and networking sessions. As a start-up, what we need the most is a platform to validate our products/projects and level up our potentials. SDG PIPE has created such a comprehensive program that tailors all necessary requirements for us to be ready with the competitive market. Simply for that reason, we would like to be part of this program.
