Not everyone is comfortable being the center of attention or speaking out. However, some people are able to overcome this fear and advocate for what is good, which is why these celebrities have a special place in our hearts! Not only do they perform for us in the entertainment world, but they're also using their voice for good and justice!

1. Rihanna:

In 2015, Rihanna said that racism ‘never ends’ in the music industry to the New York Times. The talented singer has been an advocate and has spoken out against racism in her career. Fenty, her own beauty line, is one of her efforts to break racist patterns in the cosmetics industry. Shine bright like a diamond girl!

2. Alicia Keys:

A beautiful songwriter and singer, Alicia uses her voice to support injustice and racist-based violence around her. She has been a continuous supporter of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in response to police brutality and institutional racism in the US. This girl is on fire!

3. Lebron James:

“What are we doing to create change?” Lebron said during the 2014 SPY Awards, “Let’s use this moment for all professional athletes to educate ourselves, explore these issues, speak up, use our influence and renounce all violence. And most importantly, go back to our communities and invest our time, our resources, help rebuild them, help strengthen them, help change them. We all have to do better.” The basketball player often raises his concerns and awareness regarding police brutality and racism. “Don’t be afraid of failure. This is the way to succeed.”

4. Kendrick Lamar:

The hip-hop enthusiast has a different way to express and raise issues on racism through modern music on stage. At the 2016 Grammy Awards, Lamar had a chain-gang dance in the background to address mass incarceration. Aside from this, Lamar’s philanthropy also focuses on tackling homelessness and poverty. “Be Humble.”

5. Oprah Winfrey:

Known as an inspirational figure, let’s not forget Oprah as one of the advocates of change. On January 7th 2018, the Golden Globe winner delivered a speech addressing sexism and racism before the civil rights era to modern day America. Her childhood, filled with trials and tribulations, did not break her down. Instead, she grew stronger and wiser and a role model for many.  “Turn your wounds into wisdom.”

📖 So what’s the moral of the story? Obviously, these celebrities have their own way to speak up and voice out their concerns to raise public support and awareness for racial discrimination and many other social issues. What is your way? Let’s use our own ways to support diversity with PERMIAS Nasional’s #OneWorldManyCultures challenge.
