Hey Changemakers!
How is it going while you’re stuck at home? Have you been productive or not? Though filling our day with productive activities is great, we have to set boundaries so that it does not become toxic productivity!
But what is toxic productivity? According to Psychiatrist, Dr. Erikavitri Yulianti, toxic productivity refers to an obsession to always be productive at every hour and in everything you do. In fact, those with toxic productivity find it hard to stop themselves, even after they’ve completed all their work.
Toxic productivity can have a negative toll on our lives. For example, it can leave us feeling emotionally, physically, and mentally burned out that we no longer have the energy to socialize and spend time with our loved ones.
Given its harmful nature, it is important for you to know the signs of toxic productivity, so that you can identify when you are experiencing it and to stop yourself. In Dr. Ikhsan Bella Persada’s, M/Psi., Psychology, words:
“Those with toxic productivity are trapped in the mindset that they have to constantly better themselves by doing work. So if they’re not productive, they will feel guilty.”
The following are some toxic productivity signs that you may have or are currently experiencing:
1. Overworking
Being dedicated to your work is definitely a great attribute, but if you overwork yourself to the point where you neglect you basic needs as a human such as: eating, drinking, sleeping, or even showering, it can really have adverse effects on your health
2. High expectations
You continue to have high expectations for yourself even during the pandemic, where many people have become more understanding and empathetic towards you, and no longer will their pre-pandemic standards and expectations hold true.
3. Difficulty in resting
You feel guilty if you decide to rest or take time for yourselves after a long day of busy, productive work. Instead, you feel restless and empty when you try to rest because you view resting as an unproductive activity.
So have you experienced any of these signs? If yes, you might have experienced toxic productivity, but we have all been there! What’s important is to recognize this and to make the active effort to stray away from these bad habits.
