Update

Hi Changemakers!
Recently, our social media timelines were filled with the 2021 Met Gala. From designers and celebrities, the romantic relationship of Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber, to hilarious memes. But do we actually know what the bigger spotlight in the Met Gala is?

The Origin
In 1948, a fashion public relations officer, Eleanor Lambert, held the Met Gala in order to raise funds for the Costume Institute, which at that time was about to make an exhibition. The Costume Institute itself contains a collection of costumes designed and created by Irene Lewisohn and Aline Bernstein. The two designers, who have been working since the 1920s, have become an inspiration for other designers to join in their work.

Two years before the Met Gala was created, the Costume Institute merged with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since then, the Costume Institute has often held exhibitions to showcase their latest works. Seeing this, Eleanor took the initiative to invite the upper class community. In the first year the Met Gala was held, he sold his tickets for $50 US, which was quite fantastic in the year of 1948.

The Met Gala in 2021
With the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, Andrew Bolton, Curator of Wendy Yu was appointed to be in charge of the Costume Institute. They think this is the right time to revisit American identity and fashion.

Speaking to Vogue, Andrew Bolton said he was impressed by the response American designers posed to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity. He also witnessed that the designers really reflected themselves through their work.

Indeed, the event which was attended by a number of Hollywood stars such as Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka, and many more, was spectacularly luxurious with various costume themes worn by each guest.

Apart from the Met Gala, there are certainly other activities that are also held to raise funds for those in need such as the Ice Bucket Challenge, Moonwalk, No Makeup Selfie, and many more.

What a spectacular set of actions taken by these celebrities to raise funds for friends in need. Stay tuned for more of our news and articles to feel inspired!
