🦹♀️ With the release of The Batman just early this March, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman have easily caught the attention of many with her iconic portrayal of a female villain character.
Yet, Catwoman isn’t the first women in movies to have defied gender roles with their personality and actions.
So, here’s 5 other iconic and inspirational female movie characters who proved that women is not only what gender stereotypes make them to be!
Fa Mulan by Disney (1998) :
- Rejected by the Matchmaker for not fulfilling the elegant and obedient characteristics expected of a daughter.
- Dressed as a man and took her father’s place in fighting the war, won it, and proved the capability of a woman.
Princess Merida, Brave (2012):
- Didn’t conform to the life of a typical princess and refused to get married off; enjoyed activities such as archery and horse-riding.
- Learned to be brave, independent, and took responsibility for her mistakes, refuting the idea of a ‘damsel in distress’.
Diana of Themyscira, Wonder Woman, (2017):
- Insisted on learning to fight and chose to leave her home in place of joining the war along with men.
- Challenged existing gender roles and showed that women should receive equality and have freedom in determining what they do.
Jo March, Little Women (2019):
- Felt out of place in society as she is a ‘tomboy’ whose life aspirations defy the typical love and marriage expected of women.
- Showed that love and marriage is not all a women is fit for, but that women can also be ambitious, talented and independent.
Beth Harmon, The Queen’s Gambit, 2020):
- Strived to become a grandmaster in chess, a male-dominated game, within the highly patriarchal 1950s society.
- Showed that intelligence, skills and success should not be determined by gender.
