Update

Happy National Taffy Day! To celebrate this sweet, special day, we have some fun facts about taffy that you might not know of.

  1. It originated in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 19th century where it gained popularity as a seaside treat.

  2. Saltwater taffy doesn’t actually contain seawater. The name originates from a flood that soaked a taffy store in the late 19th century, leading the owner to jokingly label the candy as “saltwater taffy” which stuck until now.

  3. The name “taffy” derived from the word “tafia,” a Caribbean term for a distilled liquor. This name was initially associated with the candy because it was sometimes flavored with alcohol.

  4. The Guinness World Record for the longest continuous piece of taffy was set in 2014, measuring a whopping 3, 692 feet (1,125 meters) long. It was achieved by a team in the birthplace of taffy, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

  5. Taffy was originally a hand-pulled candy made by small local confectionery shops. However, with the rise of industrialization and mass production, taffy started being produced on a larger scale and became more widely available.

Don’t forget to share some taffy with your friends and loved ones today! 🥳
