Update

Have you ever wondered if environmental conservation and economic progress can coexist? Often, it seems like these two aspects clash, with industrial development leading to environmental damage.

But, let me introduce you to Yayasan PADMI Mandiri, an organization that embraces both through responsible tourism and marine fisheries campaigns. Recently, Champ had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Tiela, the MERMAID User Community Manager of Yayasan PADMI Mandiri. Let's dive into Mrs. Tiela's insightful answers!

1. What drives Yayasan PADMI to focus on responsible tourism and marine fisheries campaigns?

Yayasan PADMI aims to combat destructive fishing practices and overfishing, the main threats to the marine ecosystem. By promoting responsible tourism, we hope to increase awareness and encourage more tourism providers to adopt responsible practices. This, in turn, creates alternative livelihood opportunities beyond fisheries, reducing the impact on the marine ecosystem.

2. How does Yayasan PADMI ensure the sustainability of these campaigns?

Our strategy involves collaborating with the government, particularly the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, as well as partnering with like-minded NGOs and organizations. Additionally, we're excited to work together with Campaign, leveraging the platform to amplify our responsible tourism message.

3. What is Yayasan PADMI's involvement in the collaborative project with Chandler?

In pursuit of our responsible tourism mission, we will leverage Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG) extensive network to expand our reach. With their connections, especially internationally, we hope to attract tourists who are passionate about responsible marine tourism.

4. Can you share some of the programs Yayasan PADMI has implemented in collaboration with the government?

Yayasan PADMI has been actively engaged in developing fisheries management plans for the next five years. We have also partnered with the government to provide diving certifications and responsible tourism training for the Wakatobi community.

5. What challenges do you face when collaborating with the government and companies?

Fortunately, we haven't encountered significant challenges. However, one aspect is that the government may require additional time to review our proposals due to their busy schedules. To address this, we send reminders and maintain open communication channels.

6. How does Yayasan PADMI measure the success of the responsible tourism and marine fisheries campaigns?

We measure success through indicators such as an increase in the number of tourism operators and hotels offering environmentally-friendly packages or programs. These initiatives, like mangrove planting or coral reef rehabilitation, contribute to marine conservation efforts.

7. What are the future plans for the responsible tourism and marine fisheries campaigns?

While there are ongoing discussions, for now, we will create a Challenge in the Campaign #ForChange app and provide education on the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem. Raising awareness among both tourism providers and consumers is crucial because we believe that collaboration is key to achieving our goals.

Yayasan PADMI Mandiri is an organization that truly cares about both environmental conservation and economic well-being. Wasn't the interview session fascinating? Why settle for one when we can strive for a harmonious balance between progress and preservation?
