Today is National Bao Day, one of our favorite dishes ever! "Bao" is a term commonly used to refer to steamed buns, and the bao is celebrated in many different cultures, with each of them having their own unique take on the beloved dish. Here are some popular types of bao and their flavors:
Chinese Baozi: In China, baozi can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as pork, beef, chicken, vegetables, mushrooms, and sometimes even sweet fillings like red bean paste or custard.
Char Siu Bao: A Chinese favorite, these buns are filled with tender and sweet barbecued pork.
Nikuman: In Japan, nikuman are steamed buns filled with savory ingredients like ground pork, vegetables, and seasonings.
Anman: These are Japanese buns filled with sweet red bean paste, making for a delicious dessert or snack.
Gua Bao: Originating from Taiwan, gua bao consists of sliced and braised pork belly served in a steamed bun, often accompanied by pickled vegetables and peanuts.
Kaya Bao: Found in Singapore and Malaysia, these buns are filled with kaya, a sweet coconut and egg jam.
Bánh Bao: In Vietnam, bánh bao are typically filled with a mixture of ground pork, mushrooms, onions, and other spices.
Siopao: Originated from the Philippines, siopao can contain various fillings such as meat, chicken adobo, or sweet fillings like custard or purple yam.
Momo: These are Nepalese and Tibetan dumplings often filled with meat, vegetables, and spices.
Korean Bao: While not exactly the same, Korean hoddeok are similar to sweet filled buns, with a dough that's pan-fried until crispy and filled with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts.
