Bumi Kami: Empower Women and Save the Environment at The Same Time

Update
Bumi Kami was founded in 31 Ocktober 2018 by a group of Youth Action Forum Alumni 2018. It was all started with story sharing between the group. Alivia shared a story about East Nusa Tenggara tourism potential, Eka, Dwi, and Nara shared their concern on environmental preservation, Meriza shared her passion on craft making and its potential, and Sofi told us a story about women condition in Parewetana that was in her concern. We have 6 people in the group, Alivia from Kupang, Eka and Iza from Tangerang, Dwi from Semarang, Sofi from Sumba, and Nara from Bali. Then we decided to combine our interest into one project to solve low women participation and environmental issues through craft making. Then we came up with an idea to establish Bumi Kami. It is an earthpreneur project that provides eco-friendly products for tourism industry.
Bumi Kami works with a group of craftswomen in Parewetana, Sumba Tengah, East Nusa Tenggara. We collaborate with them to promote sustainable tourism and to reach as many eco-conscious people as we can.
We have a solid team with different backgrounds.
1. Alivia Alfiarty as the Founder. She lead the team and managed the external communication and marketing. She also responsible for monitoring and evaluating the team work progress and impact achievement.
2. Meriza Nethaniel. She is the co-founder. She founded this project with Alivia when they were in Youth Action Forum 2018. She works on product developments and production to ensure that we have innovative and up-to-date products.
3. Eka Novia Endrayani. She is also our co-founder. She is in charge of online and offline marketing.
We also have Solviana Deak as our project coordinator in Sumba. She is the bridge between our team and our partner in Sumba. In Timor, we have Sarlina Tunliu as our project coordinator. She will have the responsibility for some festivals and marketing in Kota Kupang. We also have two talented youths who will become our youth ambassador for promotion and campaign, Dwi Pristiawati (Student in UIN Semarang) and Made Naraya (Senior High School Student in UPH College).
The issues we try to solve are environmental and women in rural East Nusa Tenggara issues. It is all started with Indonesia as the second largest plastic pollution contributors in the world. It is also need to be put under the highlight that tourism industry (hotels, restaurants, and gift shops) is one of the third biggest sectors that contribute in Indonesia Economic Growth, but it also the third largest plastic waste producers. Human foot prints (plastic waste) in the tourism area really affect the sustainability of the area itself.
In the other hand, we found a complex problem of low participation of women in Parewetana. This actually happened in most region in East Nusa Tenggara, but we want to start with Parewetana first. Women have a very low participation in daily aspects. This often lead to domestic violence. A very simple case of this was women have limited access to cash because they have no jobs. This will lead to two problems which are child malnutrition and poor education because women cannot provide proper meals for their child and hardly support the school needs, and high rate of migration to big city that often end to human trafficking case.
Our mission is to promote sustainable tourism industry while improving the life quality of people in Parewetana.
Parewetana is a small village in Central Sumba. Most of the villagers work as farmers. They only plant food once a year, from December to February due to the weather. In other months, most of the villagers, especially women, do not have many job options.
It is so inspiring to see the group of women in the village have strong will to participate in the craft making activity. This kind of group are difficult to be found in other region because most of the craft-maker work alone and most women, especially teenager, do not see this kind of activity as a job.
We choose to work with the group because for us, it is more difficult to gather people to join the group than to develop the existing group. Parewetana women are ready for this project. They already master the craft-making skills.
What we need to do is to help them develop the product since they never produce things beside their daily needs. Their market was limited to their region, so they only make what the villagers needs such as stuff for cultural ceremony.
We also need to build a gallery as their show room where tourist can come and buy, and see the process production. Hopefully we can develop this village to be a tourist destination and Parewetana will be known as a craft-making center and a place for cultural tourist destination, complete with its own local-managed restaurant and guess-house. The village will be designed to apply a waste-less management system as a campaign to sustainable tourism sectors. This will be our prototype project. Hopefully we can duplicate this system into another villages in Sumba and Timor island.
Our craftswomen in Parewetana produce various items for the tourism industry using rattan, bamboo, palmyra leaves, and Sumbaโs traditional fabrics that are made using natural dye and hand made cotton.
We produce decorative items for hotels, restaurants, and house. We also produce some dining items such as cutlery sets, rice bowl, plate, bowl, glass, reusable straw and packaging. We have biodegradable single use sandals and laundry bags. For the gift shop, we have various fashion and decorative items such as bags, dresses, wallet, luggage tags, bookmark, etc.
As a start, we already have some items ready to sell and we are preparing our project to be shown in Happyness Festival in March and another festival in Sumba in April 2019.
Through Bumi Kami, we hope to give positive contribution in three sectors which are economic, social, and environment. From economic sectors, this will create jobs for women in the village, and increase family income. For environment, Bumi Kami promote sustainable and eco-friendly tourism and business to make people more eco-conscious. This will also educate the villagers to use natural resources in a sustainable way. In social sectors, by having a job, women in Parewetana will have more options to improve the family life quality, this will strengthen women voices in making decision. Women can get access to cash so they can ensure good nitrition and education for their children. Beside that, they do not have to migrate to the big cities for jobs, so this will minimize human trafficking case in East Nusa Tenggara. The craftswomen group development will also become an action to preserve cultural heritage and weaving skills.
We really hope that we will get the chance to join the academi because it will help us a lot. Mentoring and support from the experts will be very helpful for us.
