• Our Initiatives
Career awareness issue is one of the biggest youth issues in Indonesia. Many of high school students in Indonesia facing difficulties in choosing undergraduate major in university. They don’t know what they want to be in the future in terms of career, they don’t know how competent they are in certain aspect of abilities, and they don’t know what major that fit with their abilities and interests. Based on Super (1950) Theory about career development stages, youth is in ‘exploration stage’. On this stage, individuals attempt to understand themselves and try to figuring out what kind of job or place that they want to pursue in their future. To be 100% sure about their career aspiration in the future, as youth, they need to know a lot about any major that available for them in undergraduate level.
Regarding this need, they can get this kind of information easily through universities website and universities expo. However, this information solely not enough to prepare youth’s career because career is a quite long journey in our life.
After graduated from university, youth still need to choose what kind of job they want to apply. As HR practitioner, frequently three of us found that a lot of applicant try to get a job by doing trial & error method. They just sent they CV away without careful consideration either in job requirement or their portfolio. But in terms of urgent needs, sometime recruiter does not put any consideration on applicant’s university major background when they hiring people. This situation is quite chaotic in our job labor, even we found that a lot of worker is working in areas that against their university background. For example, a lot of agriculture students is working in financial company right now. It’s such a waste for us as a country, because we lost a lot of our resources in agriculture experts who mostly working for financial company. This situation happened by reason of two major cause, first is our job vacancy is very limited and cannot accommodate all of our undergraduate students, second is our high school students is lack in career awareness.
From these two main causes, we choose to put our focus in second cause, lack in career awareness. We choose this issue because we believe that lack in career awareness is the biggest problem in our job labor situation right now.
As we know, that Indonesia already open itself to MEA and despite of that move, the world we live in right now is quite borderless. Regarding to this condition, youth can seek job everywhere on this earth. Therefore, limitation in job vacancy is no longer an issue in the future.
What we need to prepare now is how to equip our youth with a lot of career information so they can choose their career path wisely based on their interest and their abilities. To answer this main issue, we proposed a program that we called “Career Coaching 101”.
Career Coaching 101 is an interactive seminar that provide information about career development stage from psychology perspective and also job description from certain profession.
This program divided into three main services, first is Career Awareness. This session delivered by educational psychologist, aims to make participants realize about their interest and things they need to consider in choosing the right career path.
Second is Career Exploration, in this session participants sit together with the professionals to get information about their job and their way to get to the job. In this second session, participants can ask question and they have a chance to sit with another professionals. In one day, seminar at least, they can meet with three professional who match with their interest assessment result.
The last is, Career Consultation, in this session participants can sit together with educational psychologist to ask anything about their career preparation.
2. Initiative and The Social Impact
Career Coaching 101 is a program to help students in Indonesia prepare for themselves for understanding their future career. A program that is uniquely packaged by involving educational psychologists and professionals in various fields to help students understand the importance of exploring their interest before choosing their study program in university. Following are the steps of Career Coaching 101 program:
• Each student fills The Career Test
• Educational psychologists assisted students to understanding The Career Test meaning.
• The Career test explained in Career Coaching 101 session 1
• In the Career Coaching 101 event also present the professionals from various occupations.
• Students are given an explanation of the importance of choosing a career, study program and free to ask questions with The Professionals in session 2 and 3.
• Each student fills the feedback from to evaluate the session
• Career Coaching 101 also provides follow-up consultation for parents of students
Our career test is based on Holland Codes. This is a set of personality types developed by psychologist John L. Holland in the 1970s. Dr. Holland reasoned that people work best in work environments that match their preferences. People and work environments can be matched for a best fit. Most people are some combination of two or three of the Holland interest areas. These two or three areas become their "Holland Code".
There are six personality types in Holland's model and most people will fit into a few of the categories:
• Realistic: practical, physical, concrete, hands-on, machine, and tool-oriented
• Investigative: analytical, intellectual, scientific, explorative, thinker
• Artistic: creative, original, independent, chaotic, inventive, media, graphics, and text
• Social: cooperative, supporting, helping, healing/nurturing, teaching
• Enterprising: competitive environments, leadership, persuading, status
• Conventional: detail-oriented, organizing, clerical
Based on these six categories, the Career Coaching 101 program then presents several professionals representing these categories and the combination of it. The professionals are divided into few islands which then participants can enter into islands according to the results of their career tests.
The benefits:
1. Helping Students understand their interest and aware about their choice of career
2. The professionals get the opportunities to share about their career and choice of program studies.
3. Informed all the parents about the career choice of their children.
3. Initiative’s success story
The first Career Coaching 101 was held on February 9, 2019 by presenting 10 professionals consisting of: UX designers, Educational Psychologists, Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, Auditor, Lawyer, Wildlife Conservatives, Software engineers, Architects, Project Manager, Doctor. Attended by 88 students of class X, XI and XII JABODETABEK area.
Based on the results of the evaluation and feedback, all participants gave a satisfied response to very satisfied with the quality of information obtained from The Professionals and Educational Psychologist. Enthusiasm did not stop after the event was over, but a few days after the event was held, question and answer and personal discussions to the initiators continued to arrive, both from the participants and from the parents.
These positive responses make us willing to re-organize the same program with improvements on several sides according to the results of the evaluation submitted by the participants and the parents.
4. Why we have to be chosen as candidate in this project?
Career Coaching 101 is a program that support Sustainable Development Goal of United Nation no. 4 which is Quality Education-Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities. This event promotes the target number 4.4 that states “By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship”.
Career awareness is an issue for youth in Indonesia. We know that 20 years from now Indonesia will be face demography bonus era where a lot of youth already in job labor market. Can you imagine if they were not equipped with enough information regarding career? Can you imagine if there is a lot of resources going to be waste just because many of youth failed to prepare their career? If all of these problems cannot be solved right now, we believe Indonesia will be face a lot of disadvantages in the next 20 years. To solve this issue, there is a program that try to improving career awareness in Indonesia. But this program only delivered to elementary school students.
In other word, there is no program found that focusing on youth career awareness with psychological approach.
Youth its self is really close to job labor market right now. Based on this problem, we proposed a program that can solved career awareness issue in Indonesia especially in youth population. Through this program we believe youth will be more aware about their true interest and abilities so they can choose their career path wisely. This objective strongly approved by several high school students that joint our pilot project event (*participants testimony attached).
Therefore, Career Coaching 101 is one of the contributions and the answer that we can give to support Sustainable Development Goal of United Nation no. 4 and The Young Changemakers Social Enterprise Academy is the right place for us to learn in developing this program into a sustainable Social Enterprise for Indonesia.
