Do you believe a company can actually aim and even create a zero waste?
At the latest YSCEA by @america Virtual Mentorship session, Jane Fransisca from Great Giant Food (GGF) proved that it’s possible.
Using examples from GGF, where she is serving as the Head of Corporate Services, she showed the Top 10 social enterprises on how to create an environmentally sustainable and a highly profitable business model. How is that possible in this day and age? Let’s find out more!
Say Bye to Waste, As Much as Possible
When it comes to waste, here is how GGF has managed to minimize it and innovate:
Extract from the core of a pineapple is used to create pharmaceutical products and used keep the tenderness of meat products
The canned pineapple’s pulp is squeezed until dry to make cow’s feed
The cow dung is then transformed into fertilizer and biogas for energy
The waste of tapioca and pineapple also is turned into biogas for energy
GGF uses their variety of subsidiaries and manages to create a sustainable chain so the waste problem becomes avoidable. However, to create a sustainable agricultural business, Jane emphasized that the company also needed to work on the human resource that took part in the chain such as farmers and the employees of the company. Here are two beneficial innovations that the GGF offered to make their life better:
Use Technology to Innovate

GGF offers their farmers to use technology in their farming process. Through an app called eGrower, farmers can track their farming activities as well as easily communicate with other farmers, cooperation, and even the company. Sophisticated, right?
Provide Intangible & Tangible Benefits to Your Team
Aside from providing tangible benefits such as salary, incentives, performance bonuses, medical benefits, and other facilities, GGF also came up with an idea to provide intangible benefits to their employees such as scholarships, learning developments, dual ladder career paths, talent development programs and more! Jane was even excited to share that GGF provides class from Harvard Business School every year.
After hearing the story of this awesome company, hopefully the Top 10 YCSEA by @america participants could be inspired to create a sustainable impact on their enterprises. Let's not forget to support each of the enterprises on their launching event that airs every Wednesday! See you there!
