Update

In last week’s virtual mentorship session, Maria Shanti from Dale Carnegie gave an interactive leadership session to the Top 10 Social Enterprises YCSE Academy 2.0 by @america. You’ve heard of the name Dale Carnegie before, right? Yup, he’s the author of many best-selling books that have even been translated into Bahasa Indonesia, including the wildly best-selling How to Win Friends and Influence People.

As a multinational training organization, Daniel Carnegie suggested 9 ways to enhance a good relationship with your team for you to make a good leader. According to Dale, without having a healthy and good relationship, the people you are working with are susceptible to present low compliance and make resistance to your leading. So here are his tips:

1. Avoid the habit of criticizing, condemning, and complaining

What do you feel when you are criticized, condemned, and complained a lot in your work? Don’t you feel less encouraged to finish your next work? Well, other people also feel the same if you do it continuously.

2. Give honest and sincere appreciation

Oftentimes, you must be wondering how to give an appreciation without sounding fake. Maria gave three suggestions about this: do not make a long delay to express your appreciation, be specific, and be provable.

3. Be supportive to other people’s success

Having a supportive leader is one of the greatest fuels that can build team confidence and connection.

4. Become genuinely interested in other people

It can be as simple as wishing your team member a happy birthday by a personal message. Do not copy paste the wish from other people or the internet.

5. Smile

Smiling is contagious. Keep in mind that your happy face can lighten other people’s day, and the other way around!

6. Remember people’s names!

We all love to be called by our name, right? It can be the sweetest sound in any language! It’s very important for leaders to remember to call their team members the name they want to be called. Avoid mispronouncing their names!

7. Be a good listener and encourage others to talk about themselves

Give your full attention while others are talking and respond to their stories! Do not give the same and flat responses, as they might feel you are not interested in the conversation. Also, never interrupt while others are talking, even if you do not agree with them.

8. Talk in the terms of the other person’s interest

If you are wondering how to find other’s interest, the answer is observe what they do, how they dress, and as simple as what they put on their desk. You may also use these 7 general topics to open the conversation: the story behind their name, family, home, working experience, travelling experiences, hobbies, and ideas. This point is very important to make other people open up to you.

9. Make other person feel important and do it sincerely

There are several ways to make your colleague feel important with your leadership. First, always show up on time for appointments. Second, make sure to respond to their messages as soon as possible. Third, ask if they need any help or even you can trust them as the person in charge of some projects.

Those 9 points seem very simple, but they are crucial if you want to build a good relationship with your team. After learning Daniel Carnegie’s secret from Maria, the Top 10 participants of YCSE Academy 2.0 by @america started to pick what they found most important and committed to apply all of them gradually.

Let’s support what they are doing by joining their event every Wednesday at 2 pm on @america’s social media channels! You can check our updates to see what’s coming up next week. See you there!
