Hi, Changemakers! πŸ’™

Our planet is our home, and it's up to all of us to protect it from the impacts of climate change. Have you heard about CarbonEthics, the climate guardian? Champ has got an exciting interview with Mr. Agung Bimo Listyanu, the CEO of CarbonEthics. Let's dive in and learn more about this incredible organization!

What is CarbonEthics all about, and what is its social mission?

CarbonEthics is an impact enterprise that aims to restore climate balance through natural climate solutions. For the past 4 years, we have been engaged in blue carbon conservation. Our conservation efforts not only shape a positive impacts environment but also improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.

CarbonEthics offers decarbonization solutions to companies, and the funds are allocated for decarbonization through the blue carbon ecosystem, including mangroves and seagrass. Additionally, the funds are also allocated for implementing programs in local communities aimed at improving their livelihoods. Some of these programs include educating on planting techniques, monitoring, providing facilitation and guidance. After the program is completed, training is provided for the production of products to enhance the economic value of mangroves, the establishment of cooperatives, and waste banks.

How does CarbonEthics collaborate with ministries and government agencies to support their efforts?

In general, CarbonEthics adheres to the principle of caution and ensures a balance of information and interests when engaging with the government. CarbonEthics is aware that one of the challenges faced by the government is in formulating policies, particularly regarding funding that requires support from the private or corporate sector. Therefore, as an organization that was previously operating as a community NGO and has now evolved into an impact enterprise, our relationship with the government remains focused on the public interest, rather than solely the interests of the company.

CarbonEthics also strives to align private interests with the needs or requirements of the government. For instance, in climate-related issues, it cannot be the responsibility of a single company or the government alone; collaboration is necessary. CarbonEthics focuses on multi-stakeholder collaboration involving the government, private sector, and civil society. This collaboration aims not only for strategic cooperation but also for more tangible aspects, such as on-the-ground execution.

What are the challenges encountered in collaborating with the government and companies?

When collaborating with the government, several challenges are encountered, including differences in communication styles and interests, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and other technical barriers that arise due to varying understandings and interests among different departments. In comparison to companies, many are still uncertain about how to embark on their sustainability journey. Therefore, educating and advocating for sustainability journeys within companies remains an independent effort for CarbonEthics.

What is CarbonEthics' role in the collaborative project with Chandler Institute of Governance (CIG)?

At present, CarbonEthics is initiating a collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to support the government's actions in achieving NDC targets and rehabilitating mangrove ecosystems throughout Indonesia. This collaboration involves developing a holistic model program for mangrove rehabilitation, going beyond mere planting activities and involving communities to obtain economic value from mangrove cultivation. It aims to introduce community-based businesses to the communities for utilizing mangrove resources.

How does CarbonEthics ensure its team stays updated on regulations, training, and environmental awareness?

Firstly, we maintain strong communication with government staff across sectors and positions. Secondly, we stay informed by collaborating with similar organizations, viewing them as partners in addressing climate interventions. Thirdly, we conduct internal research. Our Carbon Policy Lab, whose task is to actively monitor carbon regulations and examine the latest news from the regulatory and business perspectives.

How did CarbonEthics successfully implement the government's new plastic restriction policy in Bintan, and what were the challenges?

Our initiative involved implementing a plastic restriction policy in Bintan. CarbonEthics collaborated with multiple sectors, engaging various layers of society, including local government, environmental organizations, educational institutions, community groups, and business stakeholders. Currently, we are in the process of raising awareness about the new regulations within the city and establishing partnerships with different parties. One of the challenges faced is obtaining sufficient resources for conducting the socialization efforts. Additionally, there were different priorities in the government's body at that time, which may not have been fully focused on plastic reduction.

The efforts undertaken by CarbonEthics to protect the Earth's climate are truly remarkable, Changemakers! Let's hope that the upcoming collaboration between CarbonEthics and Campaign will bring even greater improvements to our planet.
